We recently made the decision to switch from using Windows Mobile-based Palm Treos to RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones. It has only been a month, but we are already wondering why we didn't make the switch much sooner. One of the first things we did when powering on our shiny new handhelds was to update the software to OS 5.0.
Soon, we will have to do it again. Details surrounding the next update to the BlackBerry OS have been leaked and it appears to contain a number of enhanced features and upgrades, with most of the upgrades adding support for the multi-touch screens soon to be included in new BlackBerry handhelds. A device with multi-touch screen support and kinetic scrolling, sound familiar? It looks like BlackBerry is preparing to go head to head with the iPhone, at least with the user interface.
Some of the other upgrades that we're excited about are tabbed browsing and a redesigned home screen. For now, we will have to contain our excitement a few more months until the update is available.
