ABA TECHSHOW: DESIGNED BY LAWYERS FOR LAWYERS – DON’T MISS IT!

Since we love to talk about technology, we just can’t help but talk up the ABA TECHSHOW to be held in Chicago on April 2-4 this year. If you are not familiar with TECHSHOW, it is often called the Consumer Reports of legal technology. There are over 50 legal technology CLE program sessions in 15 tracks. The speakers are some of the best you’ll ever see (and hear) in the legal technology space. John will be speaking at two main sessions this year, which will deal with enterprise security and whether Vista is in your future. (Hint: John’s a big Windows 7 fan).

Don’t drag your feet and wait to register. You won’t be able to take advantage of the Early Bird discount if you register after February 28, 2009. We know that budget dollars may be a lot tighter this year, so make this the one conference to attend to maximize the return on your investment. TECHSHOW is a great place to learn a ton about legal technology and get some CLE credits too. If you do decide to go, make sure you say hi to John as Mike will be staying home making money.

AMAZON – THE KINDLE 2 HAS ARRIVED!

Tired off carrying around books to read on those long work trips? Ever run out of reading materials because you didn’t pack enough? Your backs need no longer suffer and you won’t have to worry about luggage surcharges by the airlines. Amazon is set to release the new generation of the Kindle 2, so now you can just grab and go, taking your entire library with you.

The Kindle 2 is replacing the first-generation Kindle, which got a lot of hype but was not as popular as expected. Like most first-gen products, it had its problems. The Kindle 2 will be released on February 24, and contains an updated interface, and is lighter and much slimmer (just over 1/3 of an inch) than its predecessor. This device allows users to download e-books using the 3G wireless network, weighs 10.2 ounces and has a 6” diagonal display. The Kindle 2 comes with 2 GB of internal storage, although not upgradable, which is roughly enough space to store 1,500 e-books. The device charges through both a mini-USB cable or power adapter and the battery is estimated to last up to 4 days per charge with the wireless connection enabled, or up to 2 weeks with the wireless connection disabled. If only our laptops could last that long!

At a cost of $359, this e-book reader is not cheap, but for some avid readers will be well worth the cost. To reserve your place in line, you can preorder the Kindle 2 from Amazon’s web site at www.amazon.com.

BLACKBERRY ONE UPDATE – STATUS CONFIRMED

All the rumors regarding President Obama’s mobile device can finally be put to rest. It had been previously speculated that as part of an agreement for the President to continue the use of his BlackBerry that he would have to upgrade his BlackBerry to a device that offered more security protection.

It was rumored that the device he was going to use was the Sectera Edge made by General Dynamics. The Sectera Edge, certified by the NSA as a secure mobile phone, offers both Type 1 and Non-Type 1 encryption methods, including Suite B algorithms at an extremely high cost. The base models for the Sectera Edge start at around $2,650. Pricey.

But all that doesn’t matter now. Photos as recent as January 30th show the President holding a smartphone with a silver-grey casing, which is a BlackBerry and not the Sectera Edge. With that being the case, how secure can your data really be when it’s sent through Canada?

You can bet that’s one phone the bad guys are targeting.
